Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
