New research reveals that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
