European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
